Planting Fall Veggies

Cooler days and nights…. it’s time to plant the fall vegetable garden!

Seriously, late summer is the ideal time to plant cool season vegetables in the garden! Cool season veggies have two planting seasons – spring and fall. Lettuces, broccoli, peas, arugula, spinach, broccoli rabe, swiss chard, cauliflower, beets, brussels sprouts, basil, and cabbage enjoy the more favorable growing weather (think cooler air, cooler soils) that fall, and spring provides. Forget the summer months for these veggies; they ‘bolt’ when the temperatures soar!

Let us twist your gardening arm a little…you don’t need lots of space to grow cool season veggies. Tuck some lettuce, basil, kale, or arugula into sun-loving pots and planters. These multi-taskers are edible and add lots of interest. Plant peas next to a fence and let the fence support the vines.

Most gardeners will agree that it was a tough summer for flower and vegetable gardening. So, out with the tired plants and add some fall veggies to your planters or garden.
